Job Description

The mission of the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is to promote and support a workforce system that creates value and offers employers, individuals and communities the opportunity to achieve and sustain economic prosperity. To support our mission, we are seeking to fill an Accounts Examiner (AE) I-III position in the Brownwood Tax Department which is located at 909 Main St, Brownwood, TX 76801.

The Accounts Examiner I-III performs entry-level to moderately complex accounts examination work. Work involves examining and auditing operating reports and financial accounting records; and collecting taxes, fees, or penalties. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

The ideal candidate will have good organizational skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines. Therefore, a written exercise may be given at interview stage.

GENERAL DUTIES:
- Establishes employment tax liability, opens and closes employer tax accounts and ensures employers are complying with the TUCA.
- Collects delinquent reports and taxes by contacting employers; audits forms from employers for accuracy, completeness and compliance; reviews employer accounting records including payroll, general ledgers, profit and loss statements and federal reports; prepares employer quarterly reports or makes adjustments as necessary; and assists employers in preparation of tax forms.
- Performs a variety of skip tracing techniques and investigations.
- Recommends collection action to the State Office when appropriate.
- Communicates with employers, legislators, and state or federal agencies to provide information regarding the TUCA and other state and federal laws.
- Performs frequent telephone contact to obtain information necessary to resolve account problems, answer questions and provide quality customer service.
- Organizes heavy workload in order to resolve concurrent assignments and meet deadlines.
- Speaks to employer groups and organizations of accounting professionals.
- May work with out of state employer accounts.
- May testify at hearings and before courts.
- Performs related work as needed or assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience or education in accounting or auditing.
- Experience in investigations.
- Experience in collections.
- Experience with payroll records.
- Experience in reviewing or adjusting accounts.
- Experience in providing information regarding the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act or other State and Federal laws and policies.
- Personal computer programs experience, including Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
- Public speaking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are strongly preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Accounts Examiner I: Successful completion of 30 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 6 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses. One year of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for the required education.
Accounts Examiner II: Successful completion of 60 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 9 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration or related courses. One year of full-time qualifying experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.
Accounts Examiner III: Successful completion of 90 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 12 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses. One year of full-time qualifying experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.

The salary range for this position is $2,453.25 - $3,528.00 per month depending on qualifications. Duty requires up to 10% travel (within the state of Texas) and the ability to lift 15 pounds.
