Job Description

Position Summary:

The overall purpose of the Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to residents. Incumbents perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations, and consistent with facility policies. Incumbents also perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well- being of the residents.

•State certification as a nursing assistant mandatory.
•State approved medication administration certification (where required).
•Complete familiarity with duties of a certified nursing assistant.
•Highly developed observation skills are desirable.
•Functional literacy in English is required.
•Tolerance, patience, empathy and concern are desirable.
•Vision must be adequate to read medication labels, etc.

Essential Functions:
•Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
•Must demonstrate knowledge of five rights of medication administration.
•May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
•Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
•Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift.
•Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
•Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.
•May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge)nurse per facility policy.
•Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state/federal regulations and facility policy.
•Maintains compliance with requirements in compliance program/plan.
•Attends facility education in-services.
•May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.
•May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse.
•Follows facility safety policies and guidelines.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
•Functions with considerable latitude within constraints established by the director of nursing,administrator, and facility policies and procedures.
•Is assigned responsibility/authority for decisions regarding nursing care and related duties, but may consult with the director of nursing, administrator, nurse consultants, or other resources.
•Communicates in a professional and courteous manner using effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills with residents, their families, and co-workers.
•Maintains confidentiality of department, resident, employee information, communication, and documentation as well as compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
•Clocks in and out for all working/training hours. Working off the clock will not be permitted at any time or for any reason.
