Job Description

The Director of Nursing assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services in the facility. In collaboration with facility Doctor, Office Manager and Chief Deputy, allocates department resources in an efficient and economic manner to enable each inmate to attain or maintain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. Collaborates with other departments, medical professionals, consultants, and organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, to develop, support and coordinate inmate care, related administrative functions, and to represent the interests of the facility.

• Provides advanced nursing assessments for the seriously ill or injured inmates by providing treatments and making appropriate treatment plans, referrals, and necessary consultations with medical authorities on routine basis
• Collaborates with physicians, consultants, community agencies, and institutions to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment, quality control by ordering supplies, repairs and purchasing equipment, and adhering to cost control measures
• Develops, maintains, and implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy, and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations
• Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation
• Supervises and evaluates work performance of the nursing staff and counsels employees found in violation of established policies, procedures, and practices
• Oversees and supervises development and delivery of in-service education to equip nursing staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, quality care and respect for inmates rights
• Establishes, implements, and monitors the infection control program designed to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment designed to prevent the devilment and transmission of disease and infection
• Prepares or reviews infection control surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions to control and prevent infections
• Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss inmate status, census changes, personnel, or inmate complaints or concerns
• Ensures adequate staff coverage for the Medical Staff Division 24/7; maintains inmate flow throughout the compound to assure maximum output with positive inmate outcomes
• Monitors the cost containment efforts of the vendors providing the care to insure effectiveness without negative affecting the quality of said care
• Exercises overall supervision of inmate assessments and care plans
• Communicates directly with inmates, families, medical staff, nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, and Department Heads to coordinate care and services, promote participation in care plans, and maintain a high quality of care and life for inmates
• Reviews 24-hour report from every unit daily to monitor and ensure timely, effective responses to significant changes in condition, transfers, discharges, use of restraints, unexplained injuries, falls, behavioral episodes, and medication errors
• Participates in budget development for the nursing department, and for medical, nursing, and central supplies
• Regular attendance and timeliness is required

• Current and valid Texas driver’s license and a safe driving record
• 5 years’ experience in a correctional setting or comparable clinical environment such as public health, urgent care, acute care, or
long term rehabilitation setting
• 3 years’ experience in nursing administration or a comparable management position
• Must maintain personal loyalty to the Sheriff
• Knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the practice of nursing in a correctional setting or
comparable clinical environment
• Exceptional skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with County staff, inmates, police departments
and the public
• Has strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities
• General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as
Microsoft Office Work, Excel, Outlook
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Some knowledge of behavior patterns, legal rights, discipline protocols, and grievance procedures of inmates
• Knowledge, skill, and experience in management as required for the day to day effective management of the fiscal, human
resource, and quality of service needs for the division
• Possess excellent communication skills in expressing oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Ability to work in a hostile environment of inmates and their visitors without reacting in a negative manner and project a
professional image at all times
• Maintain appropriate, unrestricted credentials according to the licensure, certification, and registration requirements of the
• Ability to competently perform the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical
nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care
